Camping kit

 

Basic list for a few days canoe and camping trip, some of these items can be shared by the group .( If you want a more comprehensive list I would recommend Canoe Camping by Tim Gent. He kindly allowed me to use his list and sound advice for this page. )

Tent/ Sleeping/ Cooking

  • Small Tent / Tarp
  • Sleeping bag (I would recommend using a sleeping bag liner to add warmth and keep your bag fresh)
  • Sleeping mat (closed cell foam or self-inflating)
  • Pillow a little luxury (Thermarest do a great one)
  • Mug
  • Plate or Bowl
  • Cutlery
  • Gas or liquid Stove
  • Frying pan
  • Saucepan, with lid x2
  • Chopping board
  • Headtorch
  • Matches/ Lighter in a dry bag
  • A good length of paracord

 

Safety:

  • Map of the area to be visited
  • Antibacterial hand wash
  • Mobile phone
  • Sun cream
  • Insect repellent
  • Compass
  • Whistle
  • Knife

First aid:

Dry bag (to hold everything)

  • Wound dressings
  • Bandages
  • Sticking plasters
  • Antiseptic cream (such as Savlon)
  • Antihistamine cream and tablets
  • Painkillers (such as paracetamol)
  • Scissors
  • Safety pins
  • Eye wash (again, perhaps not essential, but a very good idea)
  • Eye wash bath (ditto)

Personal:

  • Toiletries
  • Towel
  • Loo Roll/ Antibacterial hand wash/ Small trowel/ Lighter to be kept in a dry bag
  • Sunglasses
  • Binoculars, Camera

Clothes:

As a minimum per person, in addition to what is already worn. Heavy duty dry bag or holdall for the clothes.

Warm weather

  • Sun hat
  • Spare shirt
  • Spare trousers
  • Spare underwear
  • Spare socks
  • Thin jumper/fleece
  • Waterproof coat
  • Shorts
  • Buff
  • Lightweight waterproof trousers
  • Sandals (watersport versions possibly best)
  • Swimwear

Cold weather (in addition to warm weather clothing)

  • Warm hat
  • Warm jumper/fleece
  • Scarf (or Polar Buff)
  • Thick socks
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Gloves
  • Thermal leggings
  • Wellies

A complete set of spare clothes for each paddler, stored in their own dry bag or container.

Severe cold conditions

  • Wet suit elements
  • Drysuit
  • A complete set of spare clothes for each paddler, stored in their own dry bag or  container
